How did you think of doing this?
Julie gives Eric the credit and Eric has no recollection of how he came up with the idea. Maybe he heard it somewhere, maybe he thought of it himself, but the real story is lost to history.
Do you have to get a license every year?
No. Most states have no requirements for people wanting to renew their vows. In Las Vegas we did have to get a renewal license.
Do you always have a big ceremony?
No. Sometimes we just take our original vows and say them to each other at a special location. Other years we do have an officiant and do it in a church.
Did you have all this planned out before year one?
No. It sounded like a fun thing to do, but you had to start on the first anniversary or else you're done. So we did the first one and then loved the idea so much we decided to keep it going. Now we cannot imagine a year without our anniversary trip.
Do your kids go with you on your trips?
We decided early on that these trips should be just for us. So far, with the exception of Montana when Jackson was three months old, we have taken the trips alone.
How do you decide which state to go to each year?
A lot of years it is just what area of the country sounds interesting. Sometimes if we have been to several states in one geographical area we choose someplace different. Some years we just go wherever the cheapest flights are.
How do you decide where to go in each state?
We keep files of places that sound interesting and we have books of places to stay and attractions that we refer to when planning our trips. We also do a lot of research online before we go. A lot of times we'll hear of someplace that sounds very interesting to visit after we have already been to that particular state.
Since the Texas wedding was year zero don't you need 51 states to complete the 50 years?
Yes we do. We will include Washington, DC to handle that (assuming there are still only 50 states when we finish).
What are you going to do after you get married in all 50 states?
There are always the US territories like Puerto Rico and Guam and then maybe the Canadian provinces.
